Analysis and assessment of financial stability
The Riksbank analyses the financial system's stability on a continuous basis for the early detection of changes and vulnerabilities that could lead to a crisis. The main focus of the analysis is on the Swedish banks and on the markets and infrastructure that are important for their funding and risk management.
The core of the analysis is the payment system, as this is where all transactions between the banking groups take place. These, in turn, are dependent upon developments in the financial markets and also their borrowers. In turn, macroeconomic developments are highly significant for both the financial markets and the banks' borrowers.
The four major banking groups are the focus of the Riksbank's analysis as they are a significant part of the Swedish financial system. Together, these banks account for about three-quarters of the deposits from and loans to the Swedish public.
Assessment of financial stability
The Riksbank assesses and analyses the stability of the financial system. This assessment is made in three stages:
- identifying and assessing risks
- assessing the financial system's resilience to risks
- assessing the need for measures
Together with the Riksbank's recommendations, the overall assessment of financial stability is published twice a year in the Financial Stability Report.
