Background and decision - new banknotes and coins
The banknotes we use at present were designed about 25 years ago. Consequently, they need to be modernised so that we can maintain effective protection against counterfeiting. This is important if cash payments are to function smoothly and cash handling is to be efficient.
The new banknote series will have a new denomination: the 200-krona banknote. At present, there is a gap between the 100-krona banknote and the 500-krona banknote, meaning that anybody paying an intermediate amount will have to use several 100-krona banknotes. A 200-krona note will reduce the number of banknotes in people’s wallets and in the retail trade.
