Payments

Every year, the Riksbank collects different types of payment statistics from banks and payment service providers. These statistics make up Sweden’s official payment statistics, which are reported to the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Some of the payment statistics are presented below.

Cash withdrawals are decreasing

Households mainly use ATMs to gain access to cash. Over the last five years, cash withdrawals have decreased, both as regards number and value, which suggests that cash usage is decreasing.

Card payments most common

Credit transfers and direct debits are relatively few in comparison with the number of card payments. But in terms of value, credit transfers and direct debits stand for a majority of payments.

Payment statistics from other participants

E-invoices

The Swedish Bankers' Association publishes annual statistics on the number and value of e-invoices paid by private customers via their online bank.

Swish

Getswish AB publishes monthly statistics on the number of users who have the Swish mobile payment service app and the number and value of Swish payments.

Card fraud

In a regular report, the ECB publishes statistics on card fraud. This includes figures for both the EU and individual countries within the EU, such as Sweden.

BankID

Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB publishes monthly figures on holdings and use of the electronic identification BankID service.

Access to payment services

Growth Analysis (Swedish Agency for Growth Policy Analysis) produces annual statistics on the general public's access to basic payment services (the possibility of depositing and withdrawing cash, as well as payment mediation, e.g. the possibility of paying bills).

Charge cards and credit cards

Statistics Sweden's Financial Market Statistics include data on the number of charge cards and credit cards issued and on lending in the form of charge card and credit card receivables.

Swedish Broadband Map

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) presents statistics on the access to fixed broadband in Sweden via "Bredbandskartan" (Swedish Broadband Map).
