Purchases of treasury bills during the coronavirus pandemic

From 18 January 2021 until April 2022, the Riksbank purchased treasury bills for SEK 10 billion. These purchases were part of the Riksbank's asset purchases totalling SEK 700 billion to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the Swedish economy.

The purpose of the purchases was to keep general interest rates low and facilitate credit supply. The Riksbank ended the purchases of treasury bills in April 2022.

The Riksbank purchased treasury bills with a remaining maturity of at least 70 days at the time of purchase. Purchases were made on the secondary market through digital auctions in which the Riksbank's monetary policy counterparties and the Swedish National Debt Office's dealers could participate. On 31 March 2023, the Riksbank's entire holdings of treasury bills had matured.

More detailed information on the treasury bill purchases can be found in the document under “Related content” below.
