Historical exchange rates and discontinued currencies

The service Search interest rates and exchange rates provides data on exchange rates against the Swedish krona dating back to 1993 for most of the exchange rates. The service also provides historical exchange rates from 1993 for around 20 discontinued currencies.

Search interest rates and exchange rates 

The Riksbank’s website also provides historical exchange rates against the Swedish krona from the 19th century. A research project has resulted in a book of statistics on the emergence of the Swedish monetary system, “Historical Monetary and Financial Statistics for Sweden: Exchange rates, Prices and Wages, 1277-2008”.

Other exchange rate history available in the Riksbank’s database

  • 27 November 2023 Due to the change of source from Nasdaq to the ECB, the Saudi Arabian rial (SAR) and Moroccan dirham (MAD) will cease to be published. The exchange rates to be added to the database are the Malaysian ringgit (MYR), Israeli shekel (ILS), Philippine peso (PHP), Romanian leu (RON) and Bulgarian lev (BGN).
  • 28 March 2022 Due to the low liquidity in the market and the high volatility of the SEK/RUB rate, the Riksbank suspended publication of the rouble exchange rate as of Monday, 28 March 2022. Publication of this exchange rate will resume when it is judged that market conditions have changed.
  • 1 January 2015 Lithuania, lita (LTL) switched to EUR on 1 January 2015.
  • 1 January 2014 Latvia, lat (LVL) switched to EUR on 1 January 2014.
  • 1 January 2011 Estonia, kroon (EEK) switched to EUR on 1 January 2011.
  • 1 January 2009 Slovakia, koruna (SKK) switched to EUR on 1 January 2009.
  • 1 January 2008 Cyprus, pound (CYP) switched to EUR on 1 January 2008.
  • 1 January 2007 Slovenia, tolar (SIT) switched to EUR on 1 January 2007.
  • 9 September 2005 The fixed exchange rate for the South Korean won, KRW, started from 9 September 2005.
  • 6 September 2005 The fixed exchange rate for the Brazilian real, BRL, started from 6 September 2005.
  • 29 April 2005 The fixed exchange rate for the Slovak koruna, SKK, started from 29 April 2005.
  • 28 February 2005 The fixed exchange rates for the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) and Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) ceased to be applied, as decided by the reference group for the Swedish foreign exchange banks. The last value for the currencies MYR and KWD was on 28 February 2005. (Publication of the Malaysian ringgit, MYR, by the Riksbank was renewed on 27 November 2023, along with a change of source to the ECB)
  • 1 January 2005 Turkey changed its official currency from TRL, the lira, to TRY, the new lira, on 1 January 2005. The conversion rate between the two currencies is TRY 1 = TRL 1,000,000.
  • 28 February 2002 The national currencies of the euro area countries ceased to be quoted on 28 February 2002.
