Monetary policy and sustainability

In order to make well-balanced monetary policy decisions and maintain price stability, the Riksbank needs to analyse and take into account various sustainability risks, in particular climate change.

Climate change poses a risk to sustainable economic development and to society more generally. This means that the Riksbank's task of maintaining price stability may also be affected. The Riksbank therefore needs to analyse and improve its knowledge of the effects of climate change. For example, the transition to a greener economy and various extreme weather events resulting from climate change can affect interest rates and prices of energy and agricultural products. This needs to be taken into account in monetary policy decisions.

The Riksbank is working continuously to improve the analysis of the effects of climate change and how these should be taken into account in monetary policy decisions. This work also includes research on climate change and how best to mitigate it.
