Purchases of covered bonds during the coronavirus pandemic

The purpose of the purchases was to keep general interest rates low and facilitate credit supply. During 2022, the purchases were aimed at compensating for the maturing bonds in the Riksbank's portfolio. The Riksbank ended the purchases of covered bonds in December 2022.

The Riksbank purchased covered bonds (mortgage bonds) issued in Swedish kronor by Swedish credit institutions with maturities of over one year. The covered bonds were purchased on the secondary market through digital auctions in which the Riksbank's monetary policy counterparties could participate.

Purchases of covered bonds

The Riksbank's total purchases of covered bonds during the period March 2020 to the end of December 2022 are presented here. In total, the Riksbank purchased covered bonds for SEK 465 billion.
