Bank for International Settlements (BIS)
The main task of the BIS is to promote international monetary and financial cooperation. The BIS is a limited liability company owned by around 60 central banks. The Riksbank has been a shareholder in the BIS since 1930 and is represented on the Board. The activities of the BIS are largely geared towards establishing global norms and standards for sound financial practices. The central banks governors within BIS meet every two months in Basel, where the Bank is based.
Among the most important committees linked to the BIS, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) is the primary global standard-setter for bank regulation and provides a forum for cooperation on banking supervision issues. Since June 2024, Governor Erik Thedéen has chaired the Committee. In addition, the Riksbank participates in around 25 committees and working groups within the BIS field of activities.
