Database for pricing behavior of Swedish consumer prices

Researchers at Sveriges Riksbank have compiled a database with statistics on the pricing behavior of Swedish consumer prices. By studying price developments at the micro level, one can gain a better understanding of the underlying price dynamics and of firms’ pricing behavior.

The aggregate price level, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), is calculated from a large number of prices collected each month. The evolution of the CPI then depends on how often and by how much the prices of the different products included change.

This webpage reports measures on the frequency and size of price changes based on the microdata underlying the official Swedish CPI. The measures of frequency and size are constructed as in Klein et al. (2024a, 2024b).

The statistics are calculated for several levels of aggregation: the aggregate economy and different sub-indices like goods, food and services. The database reports separate measures for price increases, price decreases and the difference between price increases and decreases. Due to strong seasonal patterns, 12-month moving averages are calculated together with the raw series.

CPIF excluding energy (micro data) is based on the CPIF excluding energy, where the components not included in the micro data have been excluded. The relative frequency and size of price changes are expressed as 12-month moving averages to match the frequency of the aggregate inflation measure.

The database

The database contains statistics on the frequency and size of price changes for the following categories:

  • Aggregate economy
  • Goods
  • Food
  • Services

The database is updated with new data around the end of each month.
