The carbon footprint of the Riksbank's holdings of government bonds
To increase transparency and understanding of climate-related financial risks, the Riksbank reports the carbon footprint of its holdings of government bonds in Swedish kronor. The carbon footprint is calculated using the metric of portfolio-weighted average carbon intensity, which shows the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in relation to Sweden's gross domestic product (GDP). The calculation takes into account production-related emissions.
At the end of 2024, the Riksbank’s holdings of government bonds amounted to SEK 157.4 billion. Carbon intensity is reported in tons of CO₂e per million US dollars of GDP to enable international comparisons. The portfolio-weighted average carbon intensity of these holdings was measured at 73.6 tonnes of CO₂e per million US dollars of GDP.
