How the deposit requirement is calculated
The deposit requirement means that credit institutions and branches must hold a certain proportion of their deposit base as interest-free deposits at the Riksbank.
As of 2025, the Riksbank decides annually how much interest-free deposits Swedish credit institutions and Swedish branches of foreign credit institutions (hereinafter referred to as institutions) shall hold on account at the Riksbank. The deposit requirement corresponds to a certain percentage of each institution's deposit base. How the deposit base is calculated is described here. As the share is the same for all institutions, the requirement is proportional to the size of the institutions, as measured by the deposit base.
Example:
If the Riksbank decides that the deposit requirement shall amount to 0.3 per cent of the deposit base, this means that an institution with a deposit base of SEK 1 billion shall hold SEK 3 million as interest-free deposits in an account at the Riksbank (0.3 per cent x SEK 1 billion = SEK 3 million).
