Thedéen: Three priority issues for the future of payments
Speech During the Innovation and Payments panel at the Future of Finance conference, organised by the Central Bank of Ireland, Riksbank Governor Erik Thedéen highlighted three key issues for the future of the payments market.

Firstly, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that new means of payment and payment solutions are subject to appropriate regulation. Secondly, he pointed to the need for close cooperation between the public and private sectors to keep pace with rapid developments in the field of payments. Thirdly, he highlighted the importance of robust and resilient payments systems at a time characterised by geopolitical uncertainty.
Mr Thedéen also emphasised that central banks need to understand the pressure for change brought about by digitalisation and new market participants, and be prepared to take action. At the same time, he welcomed innovation and the opportunities created by technological developments, but pointed out that adaptation does not happen automatically.
