European gold agreement will not be renewed

The European Central Bank (ECB) and 21 other European central banks, including the Riksbank, have jointly decided not to renew the Central Bank Gold Agreement (CBGA) upon its expiry in September 2019.

The first agreement was signed in 1999 to coordinate planned gold sales by the various central banks. Since then, the agreement has been renewed three times: in 2004, in 2009 and most recently in 2014. The current agreement expires on 26 September 2019.
